Summary

Tyrant, blackmailer, racketeer, murderer - his influence reaches every level of American society。 Meet Don Corleone, a friendly man, a just man, a reasonable man。 The deadliest lord of the Cosa Nostra。 The Godfather。

A modern masterpiece,The Godfather is a searing portrayal of the 1940s criminal underworld。 It is also the intimate story of the Corleone family, at once drawn together and ripped apart by its unique position at the core of the American Mafia。 Still shocking forty years after it was first published, this compelling tale of blackmail, murder and family values is a true classic。

all cleverly disguised under a legitimate olive oil business。 His organization is structured with his two oldest sons Sonny and Fredo handling day to day operations, while his youngest son Michael is the one who has broken from the mold of the family business and is a veteran soldier in the Army。While initially unhappy with his youngest son’s decision, the Don comes to realize that this is exactly what he has always wanted his son to achieve。 When he arrived to America as a first generation immigrant from Italy, he was a poor man working hard to provide food for his family。 Over the years, he built an entire criminal empire using only his wit and friendliness, as well as his unshakeable resolve。 And his only hope is that one day his son Michael and his descendants will be far more powerful but legitimately respectful instead of living his life of the underworld。There is not a favor that the Don cannot grant for anyone who asks him, and ask they do。 The Don will do anything and everything to help out his friends in need, in return for any service that he may ask of them。 Usually, this will almost always involve something not completely above board。All of this is shattered when the Don is injured in the middle of a gang war and of all his sons, Michael is the one to assume the reigns of the organization, much to the Don’s chagrin。 What follows is a brutal gang war that culminates in victory for the Corleone family, with Michael finally achieving his destiny。The book covers several character arcs and plot lines including the twilight years of Don Corleone and the gang war that sees him injured。 Along with this is Michael’s transformation from the baby of the family to the head of the entire organization。 Both these plots are also shown in the first movie。Another story line included in the middle of the book is Vito Corleone’s humble beginnings as a labor worker to his rise as one of the heads of the Five Families。 This is covered as a sub-plot to the second movie, with an entirely new script for Michael that is not mentioned in the book。The novelization is a near accurate representation of the criminal enterprises taking place in early 20th century USA and the characters are heavily influenced by some of the most prominent and at times glamorous mob bosses of that time。The book contains a lot more characters and plots that were not shown in the movie and serve to add more of an atmosphere to the entire period and the theme of the book。 A lot of violence is portrayed not just on the mafia front but also domestic abuse as there is a great deal of spousal unfaithfulness as well as troubled marriages that often involved violence。The movie adaptation earned it the three major Academy Awards for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and of course the Best Actor award for what is Marlon Brando’s quintessential performance as Don Vito Corleone。 Part 2 saw further accolades, as Robert De Niro picks up the best supporting actor award for playing the younger version of Don Vito Corleone。 Thus making The Godfather only character to receive two acting awards to both the actors that played it, as well as both the first and second parts winning the coveted award for best actor。 Ironically, Al Pacino’s portrayal of Michael Corleone earned him nominations for Best Supporting and Leading Actors for both movies respectively, however he won in neither。Even without having seen the movies, the book reads so vividly that one can’t help but imagine Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino playing their respective parts。 One can really appreciate the movies after having read the book and getting a better understanding of the (under)world of the time and the politics, corruption, intrigue and cultural idiosyncrasies that are all on full display by Mario Puzo。“The Godfather” by Mario Puzo is no doubt a collectors’ item and required reading for those unfamiliar with a period of history often covered。 It is the novel that launched an entire genre of not just crime novels but also crime movies。 It is a story about family and loyalty unlike any other, with some incredible character development and shocking turn of events。 The book’s non-linear narrative makes for some exciting and horrifying moments that’ll make you want to keep flipping the pages。It is, as Don Corleone would put it, “an offer you can’t refuse。” 。。。more

Admittedly my favorite movie, I had never got around to reading the novel。 Mario Puzos attention to detail and narrative style made this a engrossing read。 To see tertiary characters fleshed out really brought another level of enjoyment and understanding to this saga。 I see a movie marathon in the near future。

Michele

I have seen the movies multiple times and love them。 I just finished the book and it was fantastic。 So much more in depth。 I really am glad I finally read the book!

One of my favorite heavy reads!

I laugh because I think I forgot who I was when I decided this was the book to read。 The film must really be something because I absolutely do not understand the hype。 I was expecting a gruesome story full of cunning。 What I got is a bunch of man-children trying their hardest to be “masculine”。 This book was so full of long passages of supposed “honour” codes which were more exhausting than thought provoking。 Honestly this book took itself far too seriously。 Let’s not even start with the mindles I laugh because I think I forgot who I was when I decided this was the book to read。 The film must really be something because I absolutely do not understand the hype。 I was expecting a gruesome story full of cunning。 What I got is a bunch of man-children trying their hardest to be “masculine”。 This book was so full of long passages of supposed “honour” codes which were more exhausting than thought provoking。 Honestly this book took itself far too seriously。 Let’s not even start with the mindless misogyny and racism which is just there。 Does nothing to build the story。 Do not even go here guys。 Utter waste of time。 。。。more

I am a huge fan of both movies, but now that I have read the book I am firmly in the camp that says Coppola went the wrong way with Vito。 Brando is a caricature of the character that Puzo wrote。 And not enough of the movie focuses on him and his friendships。 The movie is much more focused on Michael。 Someone needs to do a miniseries focused on the side characters - Lucy Mancini and her doctor friend, Johnny Fontaine and Nino。 Get someone to play Tom Hagen, but never show Vito, Michael, Sonny, or I am a huge fan of both movies, but now that I have read the book I am firmly in the camp that says Coppola went the wrong way with Vito。 Brando is a caricature of the character that Puzo wrote。 And not enough of the movie focuses on him and his friendships。 The movie is much more focused on Michael。 Someone needs to do a miniseries focused on the side characters - Lucy Mancini and her doctor friend, Johnny Fontaine and Nino。 Get someone to play Tom Hagen, but never show Vito, Michael, Sonny, or Fredo。 。。。more

Enjoyed and devoured every moment of this book !! Overall an easy read, but Puzzo definitely knows how to tell a story and create suspense。 A MUST READ for everyone who watched the movie and for anyone who has the slightest interest in crime novels。

An amazing book that details the descent we take in order to obtain power and revenge! Loved it immensely!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I haven't seen the movie yet, but I don't really enjoy the novel。Most characters seem flat, without true personality and character development arcs are non-existent。 For example, Michael changes suddenly from a college student to a gang leader without gradual progress and foreshadowing。 Furthermore, many of the side storylines add very little to the novel (e。g。 Michael's marriage in Sicily is just ridiculously meaningless for the whole story)。 Lastly, Mario's prose is quite dull and unnecessaril I haven't seen the movie yet, but I don't really enjoy the novel。Most characters seem flat, without true personality and character development arcs are non-existent。 For example, Michael changes suddenly from a college student to a gang leader without gradual progress and foreshadowing。 Furthermore, many of the side storylines add very little to the novel (e。g。 Michael's marriage in Sicily is just ridiculously meaningless for the whole story)。 Lastly, Mario's prose is quite dull and unnecessarily lengthy。Maybe I'm just judging the novel from the modern standard, but I think perhaps it is the movie that saved the novel。 (Will check out the movie later。) 。。。more

Although the book may be too long enough for me to read, it's pretty much a worthwhile read, and it captivates the essence of what the 1930s-1950s were like in the East Coast and the mafia。 There are also some good quotes on there, so definitely check it out。 Although the book may be too long enough for me to read, it's pretty much a worthwhile read, and it captivates the essence of what the 1930s-1950s were like in the East Coast and the mafia。 There are also some good quotes on there, so definitely check it out。 。。。more
